Vehicle Ignition Cylinder Issues and How to Fix Them

Every vehicle has an ignition cylinder. The top portion of a car’s ignition cylinder is visible just to the right of the steering wheel. The small, silver disk with the slot where you insert your vehicle key is part of the ignition cylinder. The other portion is tucked within the vehicle paneling and helps keep your key stationery after it has been inserted. Ignition cylinders play an important role in the functioning of your vehicle. There are a couple of reasons why an ignition cylinder might falter, as well as some symptoms you might notice if it is acting up.

Why Ignition Cylinders Fail

Wear and Tear
Normal, everyday wear is a common reason why an ignition cylinder will stop working. Because ignition cylinders are used every time you insert your key into the slot, it is not unlikely that at some point your cylinder will wear out. Most of the time, there is nothing a vehicle owner has done in particular to make a cylinder wear out. It is quite common and luckily, ignition cylinders can easily be replaced by professional.

Damage
Of course, your ignition cylinder might experience damage of some sort and stop functioning properly. For example, if you were recently in a car accident or even a fender bender, it is possible that a broken ignition cylinder could be left over from the accident. Since ignition cylinders are not completely visible, and damage cannot always be seen with the naked eye. There may be internal damage that has bent the cylinder out of place or loosened it from its original position.

Signs of a Broken Ignition Cylinder

Your Car Will Not Start
This is the most common symptom of a faulty cylinder, but also the most nerve-wracking. When most vehicle owners notice that their vehicle will not start despite using the right key in the correct manner, they may initially blame their car’s engine. Do not immediately jump to this conclusion, however, as a broken ignition cylinder will cause the same symptoms.

Your Car Starts and Stalls or Stops Unexpectedly
This sign may mean that your ignition cylinder is causing the key to slip out of place. If you are initially able to get your vehicle going and then it suddenly stalls, or you are driving and your car suddenly stalls and stops, this may be due to your ignition cylinder.

The Electrical Panel Flickers or Does Not Stay On
If you are experiencing electrical panel symptoms, this may also be because of a worn ignition cylinder. The signals sent between the car key, ignition cylinder, and inner electrical system may not be matching up.

You Cannot Insert or Remove the Key

In this case, it is possible that something is blocking your ignition cylinder. With worn cylinders, it can sometimes be difficult to extract the key or to turn it. If you are having any issues in this regard, this may signal to you that your ignition cylinder needs to be looked at as soon as possible.

How to Fix Your Ignition Cylinder
In order to make sure you receive the best possible repairs and installations for your vehicle’s ignition cylinder, the best professional to call is a locksmith. There are several reasons why you will want to call a local locksmith if you suspect your ignition cylinder is to blame for your troubles or you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms listed above.

A Locksmith Can Give You the Best Deal
Because you may be stranded or unable to start your vehicle in order to take it to a professional, calling a mobile locksmith is your best bet. Mobile locksmiths travel to wherever you are, omitting the need to hire an expensive tow truck. If you call a mobile locksmith, they will also be able to handle your repair on-site, getting you back on the road faster and for a smaller price.

Additionally, having your ignition cylinder serviced by a locksmith as opposed to a car dealership is a sure way to make sure you receive the best deal for your budget. Dealerships may charge expensive prices for ignition cylinder installations, as well as be limited on selection and models they have on hand. You may be limited to purchasing only pricier brands or paying additional service fees. Certified locksmiths will have a much better idea of how to help you stay within your budget for this kind of repair and offer more options that fit your needs.

Skilled Repairs with No Additional Damage
Certified locksmiths are trained specifically in automotive lock changes, installations, and repairs. This training includes ignition cylinder changes, since they are a primary component involved in a vehicle’s locking mechanism. With inexperienced repairman, you are not guaranteed the same precise training or even that your ignition cylinder will be replaced properly.

Along with specific training, a locksmith will be cautious of and work to replace your cylinder with no additional damage to your vehicle paneling or other structures. By not working with a locksmith, you risk that even more damage may be caused to your vehicle. To make sure your ignition cylinder is what is causing your problems and to receive the best repairs for your budget, calling a locksmith is the way to go.
